FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MAGNETIC CLAMPING SYSTEMSFUNCTIONING

What is the function of a Magnetic Clamping System?

The function of an MCS is mainly to clamp moulds on vertical or horizontal injection and compression presses.
They can also clamp workpieces on machine tools and be used for handling.

In general, the function of an MCS is to clamp and release, through an intended command, any object that is made of ferromagnetic material.
The most well-known applications are for clamping workpieces on machine tools, clamping moulds on presses and forming machines, for lifting and handling.

How does a Magnetic Clamping system work?

The magnetic force, generated by permanent magnets, is independent from external electrical energy.
The force depends on external electrical energy only during MAG and DEMAG.

During its usage, MCS requires no electrical energy.
Extremely high force generated by internal double magnet circuit

What is the added value of Magnetic Clamping Systems compared to other mould clamping products?

Hygienic, Minimal, Simplified Management

Absence of tooling (spanners, screwdrivers etc.)

Absence of mechanical equipment (screw, brackets etc.)

ECONOMICAL ASPECT

What is the Life Cycle of a Magnetic Clamping System?

The lifecycle of a magnetic clamping system can be extended over time if used correctly and according to the guidelines provided in the manual.

The Rivi Magnetics system, in particular, is designed to be durable and reliable, and if properly used, it can have a lifecycle of approximately a decade.

In the event of partial damage to system components, low-cost repairs are possible. In certain exceptional circumstances, repairs can also be carried out directly at the place of use. Additionally, damaged electronic components on the system's control units can be replaced.

It is important to emphasize that the actual lifecycle of a magnetic clamping system may vary depending on operating conditions and usage patterns.

However, thanks to the possibility of repair and regeneration, it is possible to further extend the life of the system.

It is always recommended to follow the instructions and take appropriate maintenance measures in order to preserve the performance of the magnetic clamping system over the years.

How do you calculate the ROI of a Magnetic Clamping System?

Historical cost of press and equipment
Number of years amortisation
Annual working days
Magnetic system value
Annual press turnover
Annual press and equipment amortisation value
Daily hours per shift
No. of daily shifts
Annual production (hours)
No. of mould changes per day
Operator cost
No. of operators
Mould change time (minutes)
Mould change time (hours)
Value of operator time spent on mould change
Value of press time commitment due to individual mould change
Total value of time spent on each individual mould change (operators and press)
Total annual value of time spent on mould change
Lost turnover per mould change

Is it possible to regenerate a Magnetic Clamping System?
Yes, completely

How long does it take to repair a Magnetic Clamping System in case of malfunction?
From 1 to 5 workshop days, plus the two deliveries, or in exceptional cases by the end user.

Are Magnetic Clamping Systems part of the 4.0 Industry?
Yes, through the supply of a dedicated kit.

SAFETY

What security does an Magnetic Clamping System provide compared to a traditional mould fixing?
Significantly a greater and tangible safety as all mould change operations are executed with the operator outside the press.

Can I move a Magnetic Clamping System from a press to another?
Yes, with prior verification and authorisation by RM.

May the mould fall off?
The mould can only fall if the requirements in design, procedures, maintenance and cleaning are not met.

How much maintenance do Magnetic Clamping Systems require?
Very minimal maintenance and surface cleaning.

Is it possible to monitor/control the force of a magnetic clamping system?
Yes, it is monitored through a dedicated kit.

How is the proper functioning of a Magnetic Clamping System monitored?
• Through command and control circuits
• EN280 - EN201
• Active participation in TC270 WG3 for MCS

Does a Magnetic Clamping System qualify for the Machinery Directive?
No, MCS complies with BT and EMC directives.

By how much is the distance between plates reduced for mould installation?
From a minimum of 94 mm to a maximum of 170 mm, depending on the type of MCS.
