Gneuss CSF Series - Compact and High-Capacity Polymer Melt Filtration Systems
One of the most important factors determining production quality in plastic extrusion, recycling, and polymer processing lines is the effective filtration of the polymer melt. During extrusion, gel formations, solid particles, metal fragments, and other foreign contaminants present in the polymer melt can directly affect the quality of the final product. For this reason, modern plastic production facilities utilize high-performance polymer melt filtration systems.
Developed by the German technology company Gneuss, the CSF Series Rotary Filtration Systems represent advanced filtration solutions that provide reliable and uninterrupted melt filtration in plastic extrusion lines. With their compact design and large filtration surface area, CSF series systems offer high-performance filtration capabilities. The CSF series is particularly suitable for applications where a large filtration area is required and filter changes can be synchronized with batch operations or production changes.
Applications of the CSF Series
CSF series systems are widely used in the plastics processing industry, particularly in the following applications:
• plastic extrusion lines
• film and sheet production systems
• fiber and filament production
• plastic compounding and masterbatch manufacturing
• recycled plastic processing lines
• polymer processing applications with relatively low contamination levels
Thanks to their compact design and large active filtration surface, CSF series systems ensure high filtration efficiency and stable process control in plastic production lines.
Gneuss Rotary Filtration Technology
The core technology behind Gneuss filtration systems is the rotary disk filtration principle. In this system, filter disks are positioned within a circular structure and rotate continuously during operation.
In CSF series filtration systems, the filter disk is divided into two separate filtration zones. These zones are alternately brought into the melt channel so that the filtration surface is continuously renewed.
The main operating principles of this technology are:
• continuous melt flow
• continuous renewal of the active filtration surface
• filter change during operation
• uninterrupted process management
When the filtration surface begins to clog, the system detects the increase in upstream pressure and automatically rotates the filter disk to activate a new filtration surface.
As a result, the following process parameters remain stable:
• process pressure
• melt temperature
• melt viscosity
• production capacity
During filter change, the polymer flow is not interrupted, and therefore downstream equipment does not need to be restarted.
Technical Features of the CSF Series
Gneuss CSF series filtration systems are designed for high-performance extrusion lines. Despite their compact size, they offer a very large filtration surface area, enabling high production capacities.
Active filtration area
Active filtration surfaces range from approximately 40 cm² to 3,560 cm².
Maximum operating pressure
The systems operate within a pressure range of approximately 180 bar to 350 bar.
Production capacity (throughput)
Throughput capacities range from approximately 200 kg/hour up to 16,700 kg/hour.
Heating system
CSF series systems can operate with different heating configurations for easy integration into various extrusion lines:
• electric heating
• thermal oil (liquid heating) systems
Drive system
The filter disk can be driven by:
• hydraulic drive
• pneumatic drive
This flexible configuration allows the system to adapt to different process conditions.
Advantages of the Large Active Filtration Area
One of the main advantages of the CSF series is the extremely large active filtration surface despite its compact system dimensions.
A larger filtration area provides several benefits:
• longer filter service life
• reduced pressure loss
• more stable production conditions
• higher production capacity
This feature is particularly beneficial for high-throughput extrusion lines.
Easy Filter Replacement and Operation
In CSF series filtration systems, filter elements can be easily replaced in the section of the filter disk that is outside the melt channel.
This design provides several advantages:
• easy access for operators
• fast filter replacement
• no production shutdown required
Since polymer flow is not interrupted during filter replacement, downstream equipment does not need to be restarted, ensuring continuous and efficient production.
Rheologically Optimized Melt Channel Design
The melt flow channels used in CSF series filtration systems feature rheologically optimized geometry.
This design provides several advantages:
• reduced pressure loss
• homogeneous melt flow
• short melt residence time
• reduced risk of polymer thermal degradation
These features are particularly beneficial when processing thermally sensitive polymers.
Importance of Filtration in Plastic Recycling
Raw materials used in recycling applications often contain significant contamination.
These contaminants may include:
• metal particles
• paper and label residues
• gel formations
• carbonized plastic fragments
Gneuss rotary filtration systems efficiently remove these contaminants, ensuring stable and high-quality melt flow in the extrusion process.
